When I first viewed this video, I wondered about the value of hearing from stars and their mental training routines...would that help younger players. But I soon found myself using the examples of a big powerful pitcher or a great contact hitter when talk to teenagers. The more I explained how such stars depend as much on mental as physical skills, the more I realized the value of this DVD and the book. You can't teach mental skills until you get kids to buy into the concept. Nothing does that better than "Mental Fundamentals". - Richard Todd, WebBall

About the creators...

John Kuehl grew up in major-league clubhouses, visiting regularly while his father managed the Montreal Expos and coached for the Minnesota Twins. John developed a passion for the game, playing through his youth and becoming the third baseman for the University of California's College World Series team in 1988.

He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in '88 and played six minor-league seasons with the Padres and Oakland A's organizations before a back injury ended his career. He was named to three minor-league All-Star teams. John moved into the scouting department for the A's and served as an area scout, where his signings included Rich Harden and Andre Ethier. He also managed in the A's organization.

John Kuehl shares his father's devotion to the importance of the mental game of baseball and desires to pass along the elements that make both better players and provide an opportunity for richer and more fulfilled lives.

Karl Kuehl has spent more than a half-century in professional baseball, working at many different levels. He managed and coached in the majors, guiding the Montreal Expos in 1976 and coaching for the Minnesota Twins from 1977 to 1982.

While coaching with the Twins, Kuehl developed a fascination for the game within the game, the mental approaches of successful major leaguers. He regularly approached the likes of Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Willie Stargell, Juan Marichal, Dave Stewart and George Brett to discuss the thought processes that helped them cope with the enormous pressures to deliver superior performances. This would begin years of devotion to learning and teaching the mental skills of the major leaguers.

He emphasized the mental approach to baseball during his years as Director of Player Development for the Oakland A's, from 1983 to 1991, where the system produced three consecutive American League Rookies of the Year and a horde of talent that helped carry the A's to American League pennants in 1988, '89 and '90. Kuehl would also serve as Director of Player Development for the Toronto Blue Jays for two years. He acted as a Special Adviser to Baseball Operations for the Cleveland Indians from 2002 to 2007 before retiring at the age of 70.

Kuehl began his baseball career by signing with the Cincinnati Reds in 1955 and became the youngest full-time manager in professional baseball history in 1959, when he managed Salem in the Northwest League. He went on to work as a scout and minor-league manager in different organizations before moving on to the major leagues and his exceptional career in player development. He also worked in special projects for Major League Baseball, where one of his duties was setting up the Australian Baseball Academy. He has also been recognized by the President of the Dominican Republic for advancing baseball in the Dominican Republic and throughout Latin America.
