Base Path Series
When the pitcher starts his wind up, only two players on the fielder should be in foul territory — the catcher and the runner on 3rd. In both cases, it's not a suggestion, it's about the rules of the game. For the runner, you're there to avoid getting hit by the batted ball. After all, you're much closer to the bat than any other runner or fielder — and you're actually advancing towards the ball. Get hit in fair territory and you're out.

Get hit behind the line and it's still going to hurt, but you'll be safe. This, too, is taking one for the team. As recommended at 1st, take your lead with the right foot farther back, favoring a safe retreat to the bag.

By how much?

Look at the diagram below. If 3B stays glued to the bag (which you'll see in youth leagues), then you should be at position B - similar to the safe lead at first - with the same step-back mechanics.
