Base Path Series
Other than first, every base should be approached with the likelihood that a slide is required. Look for the third base coach (coming into 2nd or 3rd) - or the next batter at homeplate for your cue. Assume they are there to tell you that you DON'T need to slide, otherwise do.

No signal to stay up, then get down and dirty.


Basic tips...
  • Have fun. Sliding in for an extra base on a hit or a clean steal is a great accomplishment. If you enjoy it, you'll be relaxed. If you're relaxed you're body will land more softly.
  • Keep practicing on soft grass until you're really confident.
  • Before every game check the base paths - see how soft the ground is — how long your slide can be (you'll go farther on dry gravel than wet, sticky dirt) and mentally adjust your 'take-off' point.
