Author Steven Ellis is a former professional pitcher in the Chicago Cubs organization. The difference between TUFFCUFF and other pitching workout programs is that this is based on actual big league conditioning programs. It's how pitchers now train for more strength and flexibility. WebBall considers this a 'must have' book for any pitcher serious about his development.

The complete, structured, conditioning program for pitchers

More than a workout routine, the "TUFFCUFF Strength and Conditioning Manual for Baseball Pitchers" is a 52-week, comprehensive program that reveals the pitcher that has always been inside you. TUFFCUFF shows you how to develop balanced pitching fitness — strength, muscle mass, flexibility, power, and endurance — without overemphasizing or short-changing any component. Over 180 pages with training and nutrition plans, daily exercises (illustrated), plus performance checklists, and bullpen routines.

I have been chewing on Perry Husband’s concepts for the past three years. I have found them to be dynamic educational tools in teaching baseball’s most critical skills. I have seen exceptional results in our high school program and have been impressed with how quickly these concepts were recognized and implemented for USA Baseball. - Gary Hatch, USA Baseball gold-medal winning Youth National Team (pitching coordinator 2006, head coach 2007)

Perry's latest work is a terrific example of his genius when it comes to understanding pitcher-hitter match-ups. You could jump right in with the Sequence book and then decide later if you needed the background research provided by books 1 and 2. - Richard Todd, WebBall

How to apply effective velocity theories on the mound

It's here. The Science of Pitch Sequencing takes Perry Husband's research on pitcher-hitter match-ups, his discoveries on pitch deception, effective velocity, and the hitter's attention theory... and shows you how to apply them to your pitch selection and delivery. In a more simplified and step-by-step approach, you'll learn how to use pressure pitches and freeze pitches to fool batters.  As Book 3 in his series on Downright Filthy Pitching, "Sequencing" continues the ground-breaking insights that will change everything about how you approach every game and every hitter.

This is goose-bumps stuff. What separates Downright Filthy Pitching from everything else out there is that it's based on empirical evidence. That alone makes it different - it presents assumption-shattering conclusions from research, verified by further research, and by application in the real world of baseball. Not only will it change the way pitchers pitch, it's going to force hitters into a major attitude adjustment as they step up to the plate - and it will definitely force both pitching and hitting instructors to reexamine what they think they know and how they teach. The charts and diagrams may look complex at first, but the text does a great job of walking you through the explanation of effective velocity, pitch planes, contact zones, and so much more. If you're a coach or player on a mission to be the best, this is absolutely for you. - Richard Todd, WebBall

This changes everything!

A brand new, assumption-shattering approach to pitching instruction.

Perry Husband takes the guesswork out of pitch sequences, location and movement. He has the answers because first he asked the questions... charting an 8,000+ at-bat experiment with high school hitters vs pitchers, plus a 4-million-pitch database of pro pitchers and their results - charting everything from pitch to pitch in each sequence. The discoveries made - about effective velocity and pitch plane and sequence - have been turned into a new training program that will change the way everyone approaches pitching instruction as coach and player.

Now there are 3 manuals in his ground-breaking studies. To order Books 2 and 3, or get all 3 together and save...

Reading the Act of Pitching is a humbling experience. There is simply no part of pitching that John Bagonzi does not explain better than anyone out there. The hundreds of illustrations and photos are not just window dressing, they are truly instructional. And his writing is equally helpful, yet laced with style and wit. If you own only one book on pitching, it should be this one. And if you own a hundred other pitching books, you still need this one. - Richard Todd, WebBall

Over 40 years of coaching experience in 368 pages

Dr. John Bagonzi has synthesized over 40 years of coaching experience into creating the master textbook on pitching. The 368 page book features over 400 photos and illustration in 15 chapters that show in minute detail how to become an accomplished pitcher. There are enough tips here to take you to the next level in mechanics, pitch selection, control and movement. The book breaks down every aspect of pitching, every nuance: how to adjust rotation angles; pitch sequences to get batters out; grip and release point changes. Fully explained and illustrated, this book provides step by step instruction from youth league to the pros that will improve your effectiveness from the mound.

This book substantiates some of the theories and debates in pitching circles in recent years on where velocity comes from. The research on rotational velocity supports the prior discoveries of others and the proven backshaping training approach used by Ron Wolforth. Unfortunately it fails to give them credit where due, but aside from that likely unintentional oversight, and a failure to cite Perry Husband when discussing "effective velocity", this Tom House edited book has much to recommend it. There are meaningful biomechanics sections, some great conditioning routines, and a more detailed explanation of the weighted ball routine of Coop DeRenne. Should be in your library; will definitely have an impact on your pitching performance.- Richard Todd, WebBall

An insightful study on where/how to generate velocity

Tom House, and NPA contributors, presents an in-depth look at velocity and how it can be safely developed. Details on where velocity gets generated, and how to condition the total body to maximize a pitcher’s genetic potential. Topics covered include rotational and directional momentum, timing, and fastball velocity, the biomechanical derivation of real velocity, how the legs, hips & shoulders, and spine & torso contribute to the mechanics of real velocity, prehabilitation training regimens, and much more.

It's all about captured moments

The Picture Perfect Pitcher by Tom House, Paul Reddick. 76 pages and 130 pictures that speak volumes. Copyright 2003. Considering all the words written on pitching over the years - especially by Tom House himself - this has to be one of the most unexpected books... almost all pictures. It attacks conventional wisdom (including his own) and boils the mechanics down to elegant simplicity. It reduces the whole teach / non-teach debate down to the essentials.

The core of your functional training program

By Tom House. The most famous pitching instructor in baseball "combines his on-field experiences, weight-room workouts, and years of research to deliver proven, practical applications that will strengthen your pitching throughout the year." Those aren't our words, they're Randy Johnson's from the forward of this book. To that praise we can only add that WebBall is a stronger support of Tom House. Although published in 1996, and Tom's thinking seems to evolve each year, we still recommend this book as the core of a functional strength training program for any pitcher of any age.
