Throwing Drill for the Infield

New In-Motion animated QuickTime version now available for WebBall Team Players. Please sign in or join.

Every team has some sort of pre-game routine for throwing the ball around the infield. This is one of the better structured approaches we have seen.

RED lines are direction of simulated hits and ball throws

BLUE lines show defensive movement which animates.

BLACK lines are direction of baserunner movement.

Set Up

Diagrammed here is actually the 3rd stage of the throwing routines used in practice and pre-game by Sierra High coach Jack Thomson (see side note).

The set-up is fairly basic - a catcher and infielder at each position - the objective being quick, accurate, well executed throws and tags.

As illustrated, each sequence begins with the catcher throwing to a specific base. The ball then travels in a specific pattern in which every infielder has a catch and relay responsibility.

The stages used prior to the "Chico State" Coach Thompson calls the "Perfect Throw" and "30 Second" drills - included in the "variations" below for those logged in.

Our thanks to Jack Thomson of Sierra high school in California for suggesting this drill. (He presented his version at the 2012 ABCA - and, no, we don't know why he calls it the "Chico State" drill.) It will also appear in the new version of Defending Your Turf, coming this Spring.
