Error recovery for Infielders

New In-Motion animated QuickTime version now available for WebBall Team Players. Please sign in or join.

Teams seldom practice mistakes, yet the ability to recover from an error or miscue might be the difference between a win or loss at game time.

RED lines are direction of simulated hits and ball throws

BLUE lines show defensive movement which animates.

BLACK lines are direction of baserunner movement.

Set Up

One of the most common errors in baseball happens at 1st base. Either the fielder rushes his throw and it goes off line or else the first baseman mishandles an in between hop.

Part of every practice should be to improve the skill level for the infielders, but there will still be times when a throw is rushed or a grip is not right ... the ball will tail or sail.

Then what?

The purposes of this drill is to minimize the damage ... to keep the batter or any other runner from taking an extra bag.

Running the Drill

Animation and details, including opposite rotation and variations, available to Team Players and Team Site Managers. Please login or join now.

Our thanks to Jack Thomson of Sierra high school in California for suggesting this drill. (He presented his version at the 2012 ABCA). It will also appear in the new version of Defending Your Turf, coming this Spring.
