Coming up with the best batting order seems to be a challenge for many coaches. They hurriedly scribble in some names at the last minute before walking to home plate for the pregame meet-and-greet. Or they spend hours pouring over stats trying to crack the code that will guarantee a game-winning combination of speed, power and contact.
And often with the same result... a mix of good innings and bad, some wins that seem inevitable, but more often losses when your beautifully crafted script fails to work.
What went wrong?
The biggest problem might be conventional thinking. It might be that we're using the wrong criteria to measure performance. Or failing to understand how a game ebbs and flows.
Introducing the New Paradigm
Is there a better way?
Yes there is.
It requires a recognition of how most lineups are created now ...an acceptance of the inherent flaws. Then it requires an understanding of which performance statistics (a.k.a "metrics") really matter, which batters are the right choices in any given situation. The real questions is this: "Who benefits from the guy before, and the guy after?"
