Catcher & Middle Infielders

New In-Motion animated QuickTime version now available for WebBall Team Players. Please sign in or join.

Defending against runners on 1st and 3rd offers may opportunities for sucess or failure, requiring both skills and great instincts on the part of the catcher and middle infielders. This is adapted by WebBall from the original on Britt Bonneau's "Organizing and Running Practices" DVD.

RED lines show ball travel.

BLACK lines are runners.

BLUE lines show movement of fielders.

Set-Up

Start with multiple players at each of the key positions, especially base runners and middle infield. More than one pitcher can be used so that the squad gets work on holding runners as well as making good pitches (and pitch outs).

The runners who represent the other team are critical in this and should be prepared to run full out to challenge your defense.

More than one catcher and shortstop allows for some player rotation but the key position - with most benefit to improving skills and instincts - is the second baseman, so everyone you have who might ever play there should work on this.
