Why don't players stick with the
game plan?
When it comes to brain functions and baseball, vision is the elephant in the room - the factor so big, it's difficult (but tempting) to ignore. So much of the game is about seeing objects and tracking them through space. The danger in studying how we see and perceive, however, is in quickly getting to clinical or technical. To avoid that, let's start with a consequence, an event in the game that happens a lot - a ground ball in the infield with runners on base.
The example came from a question by a coach...
QMy 13U boys have a problem with "freezing up" on defense with ground balls and allowing lead runners to advance or score because they throw to 1st base instead of getting the force out or getting a runner from third trying to score at the plate. I announce where the play is on the infield in between pitches, and I constantly preach "know what you are going to do BEFORE the ball is hit to you." We have had several 1 run losses, and it comes back to this time and time again.
