Your Brain on Baseball

The outward consequences of the brain at work can be obvious to anyone...
...even when the mechanisms are hidden deep within at the molecular level. A great example is that common baseball phrase "being in the zone".

The last lesson touched on dopamine and neural signals between areas of the brain. Now, nobody expects the average coach to take the time to study the brain at that microscopic level before showing a 7 year old how to throw a ball, or a 9 year old how to swing a bat, or a 16 year old how to snap off a hard slider that deceives the hitter.

But it's at that level that "in the zone" happens. In other words, this isn't just jock talk OR psychobabble. And when you understand more of the reality of how an athlete's attention is aroused and focused, you're on the way to tapping into it.
