The "hit and run" may be the most important offensive play in baseball, and therefore an important defensive play, too. The drill will help batters hit with a purpose, runners time their jumps, and fielders know their responsibilities.
RED lines are direction of ball throws or simulated hits.
BLUE and BLACK lines are direction of player movement.
Set-Up
Divide the team into 3 groups, one group are hitters and base runners, while the other two groups are in the field. (Ideal is 5 in each group.)
Coaches do the B.P. throwing from behind a screen, but it helps to have a catcher - as well as a mix of infielders and outfielders - in each group.
Runners are are required to go on every pitch and batters are expected to hit behind the runners. Remember: it's real "run and hit".
