Once a pitch is released, it flies through a very specific area of space ...it has to or it won't get to the plate. However, that doesn't mean every pitch takes exactly the same path. Not even the best pitchers can be all that consistent.
We have no empirical evidence that the 1" = 7" statement by the Pitching Professor is true, but it makes the point; spotting pitches is not easy.
As Dr. John Bagonzi reminds us in his book, the Act of Pitching, even a 1" difference in release point could result in a 7" difference over the plate. Yet, there are reasons why we want to change arm angle and release point to get to the same spot over the plate.
How and why?
The reason has to do, once again, with the batter's ability to model pitches and time them correctly -
something we do not want to happen.
