Preparing Your Pitchers

10 minutes of this creates more ball handling than a 30 minute regular infield!

RED lines are direction of ball throws or simulated hits.

BLUE lines are direction of player movement.

Concept

We want to simulate more of the game experience in our bullpen training. The difference is usually that a bullpen includes 40-60 pitches in a row by one pitcher non-stop, without the pauses between pitches that happen in a typical game outing.

This approach, using 4-5 pitchers and 1 or 2 catchers allows each pitcher to experience the natural gaps between pitches while keeping the bullpen session moving.

The result is a more realistic outing - both mentally and physically.

We are indebted to Ron Wolforth of the Texas Baseball Ranch and Pitching Central for discussing this routine in one of his his newest DVDs on bullpen management. We hope to feature that video soon.
