Back to School

The problem most coaches have in teaching mechanics is that they are on the outside, and the business of pitching is about the forces and counterforces created inside the body. So before we get into the obvious, visible phenomena of leg lift, stride and foot strike, let's start where the lower body power really starts - in and around the hips.

Hips First - Always

As a wrestling coach once pointed out to us, opponents in a match watch the hips because that is the first movement. Same in pitching.

This is a newer interjection within our pitching lesson series. Initially we have three people to thank for this - Brent Strom, Paul Nyman, & Steve Englishbey. (In fact, it's a term that's now in use for both hitting and pitching.)

The two images below are stills pulled from recent instructional DVDs - one by Ron Wolforth near Houston, the other by Doug White in San Diego. One shows a training drill, the other is demonstrated as part of good pitching mechanics. Both obviously show the importance of the hip move in triggering delivery.
