About the books...

Pete Wilkinson and Phil Rognier are two baseball people well known to WebBall.

Pete runs the Wilkinson Academy and the Cardinals rep baseball club. Over the years he has turned out a lot of very successful ballplayers who have gone on to college and pro careers. Pete is also a name familiar to anyone who has seen our Pitching and Hitting Challenges - he has contributed a number of articles to WebBall over the years.
Now he has written an intriguing book called 'How to Beat Bill'. In Chapter 2, Pete explains...
"This book is for anyone who would rather get back to basics and do it better for young people instead of proving what a baseball genius he is in imitation of Tony LaRussa and Joe Torre, et al. This book is for volunteer dads (and, I hope, moms) who offer to 'help out' in a brief moment of insanity and who are then not allowed to take it back. This book is for anyone else looking for a shortcut that works. The lesson: there are no shortcuts that work - but there are simple methods that work. "
Actually that's the entire second chapter, which in itself gives you an insight into how Pete breaks down the game. He makes it all fun, entertaining, and keeps it simple and very real. This is a book on coaching "for dads who are too busy to do it right". (His words, not ours.)

But what about Phil's books? Read on.
The First Swing Foundation...

Phil Rognier created the FirstSwing Foundation to help kids get their first swing at organized baseball. Phil has 40+ years experience coaching and teaching baseball of all levels. He played college and professional baseball, has a Masters Degree in Education and has developed educational curriculum programs for youth and professional players and has directed and consulted youth camps for the past 20 years.
The reason WebBall knows Phil is through Rebound Sports Technologies, makers of the SwingAway hitting station. Phil, we are happy to report, has been one of WebBall's most enthusiastic advocates for a number of years.
The mission of FirstSwing is to empower disadvantaged young athletes and students so they may actively participate and grow within conventional guidelines. Monies, equipment, and leadership have been provided by FirstSwing to proactively support these youngsters, their schools, teams, coaches, and programs. Beginning in 2002, FirstSwing began to support various Seattle and King County Christmas and holiday programs. Donations to auctions, independent organizations, individual children, and countywide drives were given to allow many youngsters the opportunity to celebrate the holiday spirit and start the New Year with positive motivation. In the past year FirstSwing worked with the local service groups and provided assistance to the Children¹s Hospital, Seattle and Everett Parks and Recreation, the Miracle League, and local youth baseball/softball teams and programs. The FirstSwing Foundation has given well over one million dollars ($1,750,000) to physically and financially challenged youth and organizations in the past two years. They are up to 20 camps, 15 Coach Training Clinics, and 10 tournaments in the Northwest.
An empressive effort, yet Phil has found time to pu together two entertaining books which are short on words, long on wisdom. 'The Code' covers baseball's secret and unwritten rules, and 'Baseball A2Z' is a pictorial glossary of baseball terms and words. Both books benefit from the illustrations of K.W. Kirchner.

So now you know what it's all about, why it's unique, and why WebBall encourages you to support the cause. Besides, you'll have a good time with the books.
