This is one of the easier, more effective tools I've used as a coach...in early season training and in the bullpen pre-game. In fact our team brought it to away games, too. It requires little explanation, the targets create their own focus automatically. Note: When first introduced in 2005 it was a thin plastic, portable but the surface would get scratched by cleats. Now it's made of a rubber compound which we believe gives it better wear characteristics. - Richard Todd. WebBall
Baseball is a game of inches
And the most critical inches may be those on either edge of home plate!
Here's an essential training aid for working with both your catchers and pitchers on getting calls and locating pitches on the edges of the plate.
The brightly colored extensions create an all important visual target during training. The extensions are 5" wide on the top and 7" wide on the bottom front of the plate, centered on the usually edges of 17" wide plate. Because the side plates are actually centered on the traditional plate edges, they teach both catcher and pitcher where they need to be to work the corners. The front edges give pitchers a throwing focus and the back points show catchers where to center themselves to work the strike zone. Once they've worked with this, the transfer into game situations is easy - side shifts are instinctive, locating pitches much easier.
The Ultimate Pitcher's and Catcher's Plate received major recognition at the 2005 ABCA Convention. When first introduced it was made of plastic, now it's a hard rubber for added durability. In use at Colleges and by Pros in Spring Training, and by WebBall.
