CROSS-OVER PLAYS

Double the number of infield plays executed in a short practice by using two coaches as hitters and two catchers. Each infield position should have two or three players - working in rotation. Coach on first-base line hits to third and short; coach on third-base line hits to first and second - hence 'cross-over'.

TRANSITION PLAYS

Transition brings more possible plays into the sequence, pairing one of the coach/catcher combinations with middle infielders, the other coach/catcher with first and third. While this is happening, infielders who are also pitchers fetch a screen to be set up between first and second.

SHORT-SIDE PLAYS

The series completes with coach/catcher combinations working their short sides. Pitchers are now working on defence from the mound. (For safety the third-base hitting coach should move up the line, clear of the pitchers mound.)

Developed by Dave Hall of the Perrysburg Yellowjackets. His versions called for more transition plays, and perhaps 2 or 3 teams training together. As run at Perrysburg, all plays are called from head coach sitting in the PA booth - nice if you've got it. Otherwise plays are called - including repetitions - by each hitting coach.
