What injuries have you seen?

We asked you to tell us how often you'd seen injuries - only those that required (or should have required) medical attention or first aid. Preliminary results are in (though the vote count was less than what we would consider valid - look for this to be revisited after next season.) Contributors were mostly coaches (68%, players 32%). Results and anecdotes will have an impact on future additions to the Safety Center.

In the table 'Average' refers to the incidents per year (our contributors average 7.7 years of observation) and 'Interval' is the numbers of years from one occurence to the next- but, like predicting earthquakes, the next incident could happen at any time!

Comments from voters...

Going back to when I played Little League a child had his knee torn open while sliding into an improperly anchored base.
- Steve Battig

Busted an arm by pitching too many games in a single weekend!
- Mark Caine

Once had 1st baseman lose the ball in the sun off throw from 3rd. She not only caught the ball with her face...but also completely rolled her ankle in the process. Unfortunately, only her junior year... never got the "ball fever" after that.
- E.S. Carlson

On the first live pitch he faced in a game, my own son took a pitch right across the knuckles - blood spurted from at least seven of them.
- Richard Todd

Prevention Suggestions

Don't rely on the umpire or home coach to ensure safe playing conditions. All adults involved should be alert to protect the players.
- Steve Battig

Never, ever fool around when playing baseball! You should always be ready to expect the impossible. Only then you can avoid being hurt on the field!
- Mark Caine

Warm up when throwing and hitting. My rotator cuff had a partial tear due to no warming up in the batting cage. My elbow got sore due to my hand position in pitching, I ended up throwing a slider every time. Just stay with the change-up and fastball. PLEASE!!!
- Rob Mizell

Editor's Update:
The lead in (left) indicated that results would have an impact on the safety center which it certainly has, as well as in some recommended products. Safety bases, for example, are soon to be the mandated norm. And WebBall has done a lot of reporting on injury research - and will continue to do so. Look for more injury explanations. Note that we no longer recommend ANY metal bats. Having seen serious injuries first -hand, having carried a player off the field, having held up a game while an ambulance attended to another injured player, I am personally committed to improving ballplayer safety. - Richard Todd, WebBall
