Defense hardly seems like a priority for pitchers. And there are those who would argue that every 10 minutes a pitcher spends running over to first base to step on the bag, or trot across the 3rd base line to back up a throw to the bag or home plate, is 10 more minutes who could spend on the mound, or doing conditioning drills, or reviewin scouting reports.
All good, if you are a specialist, who pitches and does nothing else. But young pitchers are also fielders - not only on the mound, but sometimes elsewhere too. Just like they are expected to be good hitters (not just bunters).
So, defense for pitchers is important. Besides... fielding hits and stopping runners is a great way to keep the other team from score. And that can do wonders to your ERA - something pitchers do care about!
This section currently includes two articles and a detailed sequence of drills. We also suggest you check out both pitching videos and umpiring videos (because of a video on the balk call) plus look at the Base Running center... you need to know how to avoid common "tells" that runners look for. Planned additions here include in-motion animations of pick-off moves, and more.
