For reasons not fully understood, left hand pitchers tend to throw from a lower arm slot than righties. It is not always true sidearm (as long as the two shoulders and throwing elbow are in alignment), but the elbow is often bent open much more than 90°. Consider this normal. It does mean, though, that the slip or drop on the same pitches thrown by a lefty will vary, because the release point maybe more out to the side and the fingers may not be exactly on top of the ball. There are those who argue that this contributes to the added effectiveness of lefties - movement over velocity. We don't disagree.
