The transition sequence brings more possible plays into the Falcon Series, first by pairing one of the coach/catcher combinations with middle infielders (see cross-over page), and by having the other coach/catcher combo work with first and third.
RED lines are direction of ball throws or simulated hits.
BLUE and BLACK lines are direction of player movement.
Set-Up
Basic concept is to double the number of infield plays executed in a short practice by using two coaches as hitters and two catchers.
Each of the four infield positions should have two or three players - working in rotation.
During transition phase, the concept remains the same: to double the number of infield plays executed in a short practice.
If done smoothly, your teamwork can transition from cross-over to split-field drills with no interruption.
Run the Drill
Execute all the possibilities (numbers refer to player positions). Continue with Cross-Over drills.
- Introduce 5-3, 3-5, 2-5 feeds.
- As well as 4-6 and 6-4 short tosses around second.
- While this is happening, infielders who are also pitchers fetch a screen to be set up between first and second.
- Once the screen is in position, move on to the Split-Field drills in which 4-5-6 work together in one group and P-C-3 work in the other group.
Notes
Compare the start sequence above with what's shown as the Cross-Over end sequence (animated version only). You can and should alternate the right foul line coach hitting to 5/3 and left-line coach hitting to 4/6 with the opposite approach (left hits to 5/3, right hits to 4/6). This will aid fielders' ability to respond to balls coming at them with different speeds and angles vs the base they must turn and throw to.
