How many times in a game have you seen the big throw home miss the relay point and go off line. The result is not only no chance to get the runner at home, but the batter-runner gets a free trip to second on the overthrow. This drill is designed to practice all the variations of 'cut two'.
RED lines are direction of ball throws or simulated hits.
BLUE and BLACK lines are direction of player movement.
Set-Up
The purpose of the drill is to practice every possible situation in which a throw should get the trailing batter-runner who goes to second base on a overthrow towards home. The idea is that on deep hits, one infielder moves out and the other takes a position closer to home plate on the infield grass, so he can either continue the relay accurately to home plate or else 'cut two'.
The trick to making this an effective drill is to move the coach-hitter behind second base so that hits to gaps and corners can be controlled yet provide maximum relay and 'cut two' opportunities.
